What is the difference?

Nowadays we have heard and seen a variety of web terms that for some people they sound all the same. In the past, a site was just a site but now there are many different terms used that sometimes confuse us. Follow below some types of digital media:

  • Institutional Site: this is the most common type for the companies. You can find here all the company information as the presentation, history, products, services, portfolio and contacts.

  • E-commerce: is the online transaction of business. Besides all the company information as the presentation and contacts you can even buy products directly from the website.

  • Extranet: is a computer network that allows controlled access from the outside for specific business purposes. The information can not be accessed without a password. The extranet can be used to join LANs or connect remote stations to LANs changing information all the time from purchase to financial department.

  • Hot site: unlike some people think about it a hot site is not a “porn” site. It is a temporary site to promote products and services for a certain period of time.

  • Intranet: it is a private computer network that works just like the extranet, but its contents can only be accessed by all the computers that are operated inside the company.

  • Interactive systems: nowadays the sites are more dynamic. It is possible to work more with online simulators, quiz systems, online tests and others.

  • Online Systems: there are many different types of online systems like fidelity cards, personal data records, auto management system, product data record, order system, etc. The client can connect to these systems even using a palmtop. The most important thing about an online system is the creativity and how it works.

    These are only some of the definitions and a site does not need to be exclusively in one of these categories. A site can be institutional; it may have an online shop or an online system, etc. It may have one of those characteristics or many of them. The most important thing about them is the creativity of using the internet and offering different things to your users to always surprise them with the digital media.
